Preventing Heartburn
Stopping the Burn Before it Starts
Chili should warm the heart, not cause heartburn; however, foods that are fried, fatty or spicy, like chili, can often trigger that uncomfortable sensation. If you experience the occasional heartburn, you’re certainly not alone. Almost everyone has experienced heartburn once in a while, and nearly 13 per cent of Canadians experience heartburn on a weekly basis, typically triggered by a number of factors, including the types of food consumed, stress, smoking and excess weight.
To help prevent heartburn, keep the following tips in mind:
- Avoid or limit certain foods and beverages. Avoid or limit foods and beverages that trigger heartburn symptoms such as caffeine, chocolate, spicy or fatty fried foods, alcoholic beverages, citrus fruits and carbonated beverages.
- Eat smaller dinners... and eat earlier. Decrease the size of portions at mealtimes and eat meals at least 2 to 3 hours before lying down.
- Shed some pounds. Extra pounds can increase heartburn incidence. Some heartburn sufferers find their symptoms improve by losing weight through a healthy weight-loss plan.
- Stop or decrease smoking. Cigarette smoking inhibits saliva, one of the body's natural protective barriers against damage to the esophagus. Smoking also may stimulate acid production and weaken the important valve that prevents stomach acid from entering the esophagus.
- Loosen up. Reduce abdominal pressure by not wearing tight belts or binding clothing.
- Keep a supply of ZANTAC® 75® or Maximum Strength ZANTAC® 150™ on hand. Fortunately, there are ways to prevent experiencing heartburn, while still being able to enjoy the foods you love. Taken 30 to 60 minutes before a meal, ZANTAC® heartburn reliever can even help prevent heartburn symptoms from occurring. More information on ZANTAC® products is available here.
